Winter in Crete

Did you know that we have quite a few properties which are open all year. Being here outside the main season is very popular with guests from the U.S and Australia/New Zealand. It is also the time of year when many Greeks get some time for a holiday and Chania is one of the most popular domestic destinations.

Coming from the U.K, you need to change at Athens, but by combining EasyJet from Gatwick and Aegean to Chania, you can fly scheduled for about £215.00 per person return. There is no hanging around at the airport and you can stay at one of our cottages at http://simplycreteholidays.co.uk/Natalias-traditional-houses-Douliana-Apokoronas-Chania-crete.html from just £495 per week.

Chania

Called in to see guests yesterday at http://simplycreteholidays.co.uk/MARIALENA-VILLAS-megala-chorifaia-chania-crete.html and left them some of Viki's home made Houmous. Later we went into Chania  to have a look at some property locations in the old town. We had a coffee on the harbour and a good walk around. Chania is a big city and it might take a while to learn our way around. We did find two town centre car parks which might save time from now on.

Called in at kafeneion at Stilos on the way back. Massive pork chops cooked at home with the freshest lettuce salad ever. Woman (no idea who!) knocked on the door and took us to see yet another cottage in the village.

Quiet night in to recover from the chaos of the last 3 days. It all starts again in the morning.

Problem solving in Crete

1: Recieve phone call to find that Mom has locked herself out, cunningly leaving the key on the inside, in the lock.

2: Can't use spare key because key is in the lock on the other side of the door.

3: Discover that nearest locksmith is 25km away and costs large amounts of money.

4: Local suggests smash window, remove key and replace glass.

5: Job done. Total cost for replacement glass 5 euros. Total time taken 20 minutes  Smile

Still raining but .......

So last night our house guests cancelled because of the weather and Viki cooked a red Thai curry. Just as we sat down to eat, they called to say that we could still meet so they turned up and after a bit of a chat we all ( 6 of us) went to the kafeneion in Stilos. Takis insisted on filling the table, not only with food, but with another four people from the village.

Another party came in to have a sing-song and it was a superb night with us meeting some more new people. We ate boiled goat (vrasto), goat in tomato sauce (kokkinisto), fried cod in batter (bakaliaros) with garlic paste (skordalia), fresh field mushrooms(manitaria) and whitebait (picarel). Some beer and some wine to wash it down with and then some sort of lamb soup which was absolutely beautiful with cretan rusks dropped in and juice of half a lemon added for good measure. Just too much food to finish ........

We awoke this morning (Oxi Day in Greece, a bank holiday) to find it raining again but the day was made by Rue and Ida arriving for a brief visit from Agios Nikolaos. After a cup of tea and a chat we all went off to Gavalohori to eat at the taverna on the square. The food was excellent and mainly vegetarian (except the village sausages). Spicy cheese dip (tyrokafteri), Boureki (sort of potato, leek and veg pie), Imam (aubergine, stuffed) and a season salad with dill. Ida picked up the bill. We'll get you next time!

Between meals we have to finish the new web page for the villas in Agios Pavlos and get it published to the site.

Cyclops?

Nestled between the Aegean and Libyan Sea, Crete, the largest of the Greek Islands, sits at the southern most tip of Europe, the crossroad of cultures, civilizations, East and West, Africa and Europe.

The islands of the Aegean are peaks of underwater mountains that extend out from the mainland. Crete is the last of this range and boasts a diverse beauty from its high mountains of Psiloritis, Lefka Ori, Dikti, to its ocean caressed pink sand beaches.

Much of the island of Crete is Miocene and filled with fossil mollusks, bivalves, gastropods and their marine pals who lived 5 to 23 million years ago in these warm, tropical waters. One of the best collecting sites is the beachside haunt of Elafonisi, on the island’s southern tip, 43km from Kastelli and 76km from Chania.

Aside from the plentiful fossils in creamy pink limestone matrix, the beach is home to sun bathing locals and rare extant marine species. Pinniped Seals and Loggerhead Sea turtles call this part of the world home.

The fields are crimson, filled with lush, red Cretan Poppies. If you have a taste for something more remote, and venture into the local mountains, you’ll see wonderful folliage, exquisite orchids and deep in the cretan forests the last remaining lynx, Roe Deer, Wild Goat and brown bear.

After a day of collecting, you can take in the vineyards to indulge in some fine cretan wine and local olive oil. Enough of either will inspire you to take in the local music and have you doing the Pentozali by nightfall.

Where in the World:

Elafonisi (alternate spelling Elafonissi) on the southern tip of Crete, 43km from Kastelli and 76km from Chania. longitude 23o 30' 60" N, latitude 35o 15' 60" N

Getting there:

Both Aegean Airlines fly into Crete. If you stop to take in the monastery of Panagia Chrisoskalitissa, "Our Lady of the Golden Step," it is just a mere 6km further to the beaches of Elafonisi via a dirt road. If you are without a car, no worries, there is regular bus service to Elafonisi from Kasteli and Chania. Conveniently, the fossil exposures are easy to spot and a stones throw from the main bus stop.

There is so much more to say about Crete but I'll stop this adventure at Elafonisi. The island holds many mysteries and bountiful fossil finds, including the remains of Deinotherium giganteum, a massive 8 million-year-old mammal and primative relative of the elephants roaming the Earth today.

With an emormous large nasal opening at the centre of his skull, presumably to house a rather largish trunk, Deinotherium may be the inspiration behind the myth of the Cyclops, the one-eyed giant from Homer's famous Odyssey... but that is a tale for another day.

Not the central heating then .......

So that was the electrician who had to do the electrical checks before the central heating man comes. At least we have a back-up hot water system now. The other man will come "in some days"

Mmmmmmmm

Work, work, work

The men are coming around to check the central heating system this morning before the winter starts. We went to see a place in our village yesterday which is used for art groups and symposiums. Three lovely cottages in an enclosed area with a shared pool. Excellent! Afterwards we went to see Vassilis wine cellar and sampled some 16 and 33 year old local wine and saw another nice cottage (his brothers). A quick trip to the kafeneion in Stilos and then home to check the X factor results (how sad). How are those two still in the chase ????????

This evening we have the owners of http://simplycreteholidays.co.uk/Manos-villas-megala-Chorafia-chania-crete.html coming round for drinks and then we are going to a taverna "somewhere". They should be bringing friends with them to give us pricing for some villas we saw the other day.

Love this place ! Smile

Looking forward to seeing Rue and Ida tomorrow. Can't wait to see you ladies !
