Filitsa Traditional Villas, Kefalas, Chania

t
Situated in the sleepy village of Kefalas, in the Apokoronas area of Chania, Villa Filitsa was built, in part, by the Turkish General Commander of Crete,
Moustafa Pasa in the beginning of the 18th century.  At that time the capital of Crete revolved between Chania and Iraklion.  When Moustafa was in
Chania, he used this as a country home where he stayed with his wives and personnel.  Captain Mathios Milonogiannis was the leader of the
Apokoronas freedom fighters during the fighting against the Ottoman Empire.  Two brothers, eventually bought this house from the Greek
government in 1923 and it has been occupied by his ancestors ever since.  In 1985 the Ministry of Culture declared the house a national historical
monument.  Restoration work began on the house in April 2001 under the supervision of the Archaeology Ministry.  Many of the same building
techniques used centuries ago were used during the year-long restoration. Villa Filitsa now houses four beautifully renovated, well equipped, separate
" houses", particularly suitable for couples wanting a quiet holiday surrounded by local culture in an area of natural beauty.

The houses share a wonderful stone courtyard, each having a private outside area, which leads to a colorful garden with a large swimming pool ( 16
x 6m and 1.7m deep) and sunning area with beds and umbrellas.

Each of the houses are different and all of them have air conditioning. The Arches enjoys 3 traditional  Venetian stone arches that are 5 meters high,
This was the original sitting area and wine cellar. This suite can accommodate up to two adults and a child. There is a full-size iron bed on the loft
level and a fill size sleep sofa in the living area. Harem ( which was originally the harem of the house) is divided over three floors . On the upper
living space there are twelve windows with a view of the sea and a large roof terrace with excellent views. This suite can accommodate 4 persons.
There is a loft with a full-size iron bed, and 2 twin beds in the living area and the ground floor has a queen size sofa. Due to the quirky design, Harem
is not suitable for children. The Bakery is the former kitchen and still retains many original features and the original wood burning oven has been
restored and can also be used as a fireplace. A double and single bed provide accommodation for three people. The single bed is located in what used
to be an open hearth fireplace. The Venetian suite is suitable for two people. The fireplace where Greek coffee simmered in the ashes is now a
decorative feature. This open plan suite has a full-size iron bed and accommodates two people.
All of the houses are fully equipped for self catering and are available both winter and summer. This accommodation would be perfect for couples
wanting a quiet romantic location and enjoy nature, local culture and walking. Just a ten minute drive away, is a delightful hidden cove, ideal for
swimming off the rocks and with its own quintessentially Greek fish taverna.

Kefalas Area Information

Situated to the northeast of Vamos, Kefalas  is a wonderful traditional village with a rich preservation of
local architecture and impressive old village churches. It owns its name to the first residents there, called
Kephalades, the leaders of the Byzantine settlers sent to Crete in 1182 by Alexios Komninos.
The village has two traditional Kafenions, serving coffee, drinks and meze. There is a taverna serving
Cretan food, and a mini market. A van arrives daily at the village square selling fresh fish, vegetables and
bread. The larger town of Vamos ( 5km away) has a larger selection of eating places and shops.

Close to Kefalas ( 10 mins drive)  is a small quiet bay, Obrosialos bay, with a fish taverna, perfect for
swimming in the crystal clear waters.

This area is perfect for those wanting to enjoy Cretan filoxenia and culture in a beautiful village, and those
who enjoy walking, cycling  and sight seeing. The historic city of Chania is about 30 mins drive away.
