| Rethymnon represents a place of contrasts, boasting a long and remarkable history as well as untouched places of natural beauty and living traditions. The prefecture of Rethymnon is bordered by both Heraklion and Chania. The city of Rethymnon is a vibrant university town, and this is reflected in the craft shops, cafés, and inviting stylish bars that seem to be around every corner. The wonderful Old Town, huddles beneath the imposing walls of the Venetian Forteza, the Turks left behind their legacy of the Mosque of Nerantzies and minaret in the old town and there are several other mosques still there today. Hearty traditional food and live Cretan music can be found in many of the small tavernas in the winding lanes of the Old town. Rethymnon's deep history is visible everywhere. Away from the city you can explore the Amari Valley, the foothills of Psiloritis and the historic monastery of Arkadi. Villages such as Spili and the unique unspoilt beauty of Preveli can be found near the south coast along with the coastal resorts of Plakias and Agia Galini. On the north coast, the long sandy beaches to the east (Platanes) and west of the city attract many visitors in the summer and can get very busy and very touristic, but the areas a little inland can still provide a relaxing and peaceful option, even in peak season. Rethymnon also hosts one of the largest Apokreas (Mardi Gras) carnival in Greece second to Patras in February , when the town erupts in a flurry of costumes, reminiscent of Venice and there is much celebrating . |
